Football is back, baby! On Friday, August 26th, the Scotties were looking to start the season off with a bang. Taking on the Cajon Cowboys, it was time to begin the quest for another CIF championship.
Things got off on the wrong track, as fumbles on their first two kick off returns put Helix in an 8-0 hole. However, a Delshawn Traylor five yard touchdown run made it an 8-6 game at the end of the first.
Cajon had a good start to the second, as quarterback Patrick Ragan threw his second touchdown of the night to extend their lead. That’s when Helix’s star running back Elelyon Noa started to heat up. His first of three rushing touchdowns put Helix right back in the game at a 16-13 score going into halftime.
After a phenomenal performance by Helix’s marching band, both teams were ready for the second half of football. Once again, Cajon struck first, as Patrick Ragan threw another touchdown. However, this was the last time the Cowboys would find the endzone. Elelyon Noa’s second touchdown of the game would close out the third quarter with a 22-20 score.
With just 12 minutes left, the fourth quarter would be the last chance for both teams to put up points on the scoreboard. Highlander students erupted as Elelyon Noa’s monster day continued with the go-ahead score. With their first lead of the game and not much time left on the clock, Helix’s defense needed to lock down. And they delivered. Star linebacker Jeremiah Fletcher made a huge difference, as he recovered a fumble that would allow Helix to run out the clock. Needing one final stop, Jeremiah sealed the deal for the Highlander football team with his first interception of the year. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
The Scotties will look to build on their 1-0 start as they take on the Herriman Mustangs from Utah this Friday.
